- Primary Treatment: In this stage, the wastewater is allowing to settle in a primary settling tank or clarifier. During settling, solid particles settle to the bottom as sludge, while lighter materials float to the top as scum. This process helps in the separation of solids from the liquid phase.
- Secondary Treatment: After primary treatment, the wastewater undergoes biological treatment, often in an aeration tank. Microorganisms are using to break down organic matter in the wastewater, reducing its pollutant levels. This can be done through activated sludge processes, extended aeration, or other biological treatment methods.

Sewage Treatment Plant Technologies
The membrane bioreactor (MBR) process is based on a treatment plan in which microporous membranes for solid/liquid separation are using instead of secondary clarifiers in the suspended growth activated sludge process. As a result, the entire treatment apparatus is extremely small, providing high-quality effluent acceptable for a variety of reuse applications.
